The Makings of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games

In October of 2009 it was announced that the 2016 Summer Olympic Games would take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 2016 Summer Olympics are unique in the fact that it is the first time that the Olympic Games take place in a South American country.

The games will begin with the opening ceremony, set to take place on August 5, 2016, and will end with the closing ceremony on August 21, 2016.

Preparations have already begun for the 2016 Summer Olympics, with Brazil spending billions of dollars to get everything ready.

The Brazilian government is planning to invest approximately $17 million dollars to improve their mass transit infrastructure in preparation for the Olympic Games.

The government is also spending money to renovate existing venues as well as build new structures to house the games.

The host of the majority of the venues will be Barra da Tijuca, along with three other areas that will also house venues including Maracena, Copacabana Beach, and Deodoro.

It is also planned that Barra da Tijuca will be home to the Olympic Village where the athletes will stay. All of these areas have to be updated and renovated in preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Some of the venues where the games will take place include:

  • Maria Lenk Aquatic Center – this will be where the water polo, swimming, and diving will take place.
  • Copacabana Beach – this is where the beach volleyball, marathon swimming, and triathlon events will occur.
  • HSBC Arena – this will house the basketball, gymnastics, and trampoline portions of the games.

Renovations to all of the above buildings will take place. In fact, the updates to the Samadrome where the marathon and archery events will take place were completed in early 2012.

Besides all of the preparations to the game venues and athlete housing, security has also been taken into consideration, keeping in mind Rio de Janeiro’s crime problems.

The International Olympic committee is optimistic that the city of Rio and country of Brazil will address these concerns in a timely manner and ensure that the games are safe for both athletes and spectators.

A lot of time and money goes into preparing to host the Olympic Games and there is a lot of work to be done before the 2016 Summer Olympic Games begin.
