The Makings of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games

The 2014 Winter Olympics will take place in Sochi, Russia. It will be Russia’s first Winter Olympics. This will also be Russia’s first Olympic games since the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Russia is still part of the Soviet Union. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia. Preparations have been ongoing ever since.

It takes years of planning to choose a city to host the Olympic games. This includes building the Olympic venues, tourist infrastructure, and power supply. Russia is expected to spend around 10 billion dollars to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Sochi Olympic Park will be located next to the Black Sea. All venues will be clustered together in a central location that is easily accessible from each other. These buildings will make up the Olympic Park:

  • Fisht Olympic Stadium
  • Bolshoy Ice Dome
  • Adler Arena Skating Center
  • Shayba Arena
  • Main Olympic Village
  • Formula One Pit Lane
  • Iceberg Skating Palace
  • International Broadcasting Center (IBC) and Main Press Room
  • Ice Cube Curling Center

A new Olympic Complex will be built in Krasnaya Poliana. It will include the following buildings:

  • Biathlon and Ski Complex
  • Sliding Center Sanki
  • Rosa Khutor Plateau Olympic Village
  • Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort
  • RusSki Gorki jumping center
  • Freestyle skiing and snowboard park

It is a huge undertaking to build the infrastructure for the Olympic Games. Apart from the monumental task of building the Olympic Games venues and the telecommunications, transport, and power infrastructure, all must be prepared and modernized.

The preparation of the telecommunications infrastructure includes adding mobile radio communications, fiber optic cable, and digital broadcasting stations.

The power infrastructure will need to be updated by updating electrical substations, thermal power stations and hydroelectric power stations.

It will also improve the transportation system, which includes bridges, roads and tunnels as well as railroads and stations around Sochi.

In addition to the new infrastructure and venues for the games, accommodations will be built for spectators.

This includes the construction of enough hotels to accommodate more than 10,000 people. A significant amount of money is spent to upgrade the sewage system in Sochi.

Russian Federation will also construct an island in the ocean, which will be next to the Lesser Akhun Subdistrict. This subdistrict is located in the Khostinsky City District.
